Why were women accused of witchcraft in the crucible?

The girls who made the accusations beleived themselves to be possessed by the devil, they were necouraged to believe this by adults who had become disturbed by their strange behaviour. They accused those they believed had bewitched them. Some of the accused were men. Of the 20 people executed as Salem, six were men.
