Neutering my dogs? Is a cone really necessary?

I am taking my 6 month old labs to get neutered. The vet recommends using those cone things for 2 weeks after wards to keep them from messing with the wound. At $20 bucks each, they seem way overpriced. Is this just an “add on” sale for the vet or is this really necessary?
