My car cd player wont play mp3, help?

When I bought my 98 honda civic, it came with a cd player (I don't know what brand or model), but the problem is that it won't play my burned disc. All the audio formats were mp3. Could it be because its broken? or should I use another audio format, such as, .aud, .wav, .wma..?
